Watch: Missing dog returns home by ringing the doorbell

Let’s face it, the current news cycle has been nothing short of depressing lately, but there’s nothing like a wholesome dog story to make us smile amid the chaos: A couple in South Caroline, in the United States (US) had quite the surprise just recently after their dog, which had been missing, turned up at their door and rang the bell to be let in.

According to Fox News, Mary Lynn Whitacre and Ryan Washick’s  lab-Catahoula Leopard Dog mix named Rajah ran away after being spooked by nearby fireworks. The dog had been playing outside at the time before jumping over the fence and making a run for it.

Whitacre said that since their dog is such a fast runner, they had no idea where Rajah was or how far away she could have gotten. The couple searched for her for more than seven hours, with no luck. They had even uploaded pictures of their beloved pet on social media, urging people to be on the lookout.

“If you live around here please keep an eye out for her or if you know anyone who lives around this area please share with them! She does have a tag with our phone numbers on her collar and she is microchipped,” Whitacre wrote on Facebook.

Watch: Dog finds way back home

They had only been living in their home for a month, so they were concerned Rajah would not even know the way back.

Then at around 03:00, the doorbell rang and it wasn’t the pizza guy or a neighbour – it was Rajah who somehow knew how to operate the device.

Whitacre told the broadcaster that she has no idea where the 18-month-old dog could have learned to even ring a doorbell because she and her husband hardly ever use it. She reckons Rajah might have seen someone else press it.

“UPDATE: she’s safe at home now. Thank you so much for helping and sharing. We are so grateful and are so happy to have our girl back home,” she later said on Facebook.
