The internet has mixed reactions to Prince Harry’s ‘intimate memoir’

Prince Harry is reportedly ready to tell his story. Following a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, a Netflix and Spotify deal and various revelations about his mental health struggles in a documentary series, Prince Harry wants to tell his story in an intimate memoir set to be released in 2022.

Prince Harry to release memoir

Penguin Random House announced the news on 19 July, saying that the Duke of Sussex will publish “an intimate and heartfelt memoir” in late 2022. It will be “the definitive account of the experiences, adventures, losses, and life lessons that have helped shape him.”

“Covering his lifetime in the public eye from childhood to the present day, including his dedication to service, the military duty that twice took him to the frontlines of Afghanistan, and the joy he has found in being a husband and father, Prince Harry will offer an honest and captivating personal portrait, one that shows readers that behind everything they think they know lies an inspiring, courageous, and uplifting human story.”

The yet-to-be-titled autobiography will be published globally, with an audiobook version released simultaneously.

The man I’ve become

Prince Harry also released a statement saying that he is not writing this as the “prince I was born but as the man, I have become”.

“I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story — the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned — I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think,” he wrote. “I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful.”

Financial terms of Prince Harry’s memoir

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the 36-year-old will reportedly donate proceeds to charity, according to Random House.

Social media has mixed emotions about Prince Harry’s recent project, saying that “be it his ‘truth’ the whole of his ‘truth’ and nothing, absolutely nothing like the truth…will Meghan get credit for Creative Editor?” asked Clive Smith. “I can tell you one thing right now, it will be far from honest,” said Becky Moss. Others are very eager to read it, though. “I am already loving this book,” D Mathilde.

A bombshell interview

In the interview with Oprah, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spoke of their struggles as senior members of the royal family. After stepping down in January 2020, Meghan said that it had to be done as she was lonely and nearly suicidal. Prince Harry also acknowledged that there was tension with his father, Prince Charles, over his decision to step back from his royal duties and his marriage.

“There is a lot to work through there,” Harry said about his relationship with his father. “I feel really let down. He’s been through something similar. He knows what pain feels like. And Archie (Harry and Meghan’s son) is his grandson. I will always love him, but there is a lot of hurt that has happened.”

Harry told Winfrey that he felt trapped by royal life and that his family cut off him financially and took away his security. He also acknowledged his relations were strained with his brother, Prince William.

“I was trapped, but I didn’t know I was trapped,” Harry said, before adding, “My father and my brother, they are trapped.”
