Soweto mall reopens today – thanks to the hero who protected it from looters

Nhlanhla Lux has become something of a household name this month. The Soweto Youth Parliament member led an air-tight operation to protect the Maponya Mall in this part of Gauteng, and his efforts soon went viral when news crews filmed him making a citizen’s arrest. The budding commander also met with President Ramaphosa on Friday.

Soweto strong: Who is Nhlanhla Lux?

Lux, who was able to mobilise his community in a stunning display of togetherness, patrolled Maponya Mall for the best part of a week, getting very little sleep in between. He and his team leaders were allegedly shot at by those looking to ransack the shopping facility in Soweto, but thankfully, no-one was injured in the crossfire.

The public figure, who has more than 14 000 followers on Twitter, was able to use his platform to galvanise his fellow residents. While he led from the front, hundreds of others formed a protective ring around the mall. His actions did not go unnoticed, and ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba was one of the famous faces offering him the highest possible praise.

From 8:00 on Tuesday 20 July, Maponya Mall is fully functional again – the rapid turnaround is a testament to Lux’s operation, and the community spirit which helped resist the tide of swelling anger in Gauteng.
