Mamelodi Sundowns or Kaizer Chiefs? Teboho Mokoena reveals his preference, gives two reasons

Supersport United midfielder Teboho Mokoena has reportedly stated his preferred transfer destination between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs.

Chiefs and Sundowns interested

Amid intense speculation linking Mokoena with a transfer away from Supersport, with both Sundowns and Chiefs reportedly hot on his heels, he supposedly revealed his preference and even gone as far as stating reasons for it.

Mokoena has been at Supersport for the duration of his career thus far, and owes a lot of his development and attributes as a footballer to the club. The 24-year old made his PSL debut for Matsatsantsa in 2016 and has been a mainstay of the club ever since. He has since amassed over 70 appearances for the club but is understood to harbour ambitions to test himself at level conducive for challenging for high honours from next season onwards.

Mokoena’s first preference is an overseas move

Although it is no secret that all of Mokoena, his agent and Supersport would prefer to hold out for an overseas move, it is believed that should that not materialise, Sundowns and Chiefs are his most likely destination for a local transfer as the two clubs are credited with the most interest in the mercurial midfielder.

Both Sundowns and Chiefs had previously been given encouragement for their pursuits of both Mokoena and Sipho Mbule with Supersport reportedly stating that they’re open to selling the star duo. The encouragement did appear to be conditional however, as it stated that the two PSL giants would have to face an anxious wait for the green light to negotiate with Supersport as they hoped the duo would attract overseas suitors at the Tokyo Olympics currently underway.

A possible boost to Chiefs and blow to Sundowns

Mbule pulling out due to medical reasons is thought to have worked in the favour of Chiefs, with latest reports saying they have since overtaken Sundowns to be in the driving seat for his signature. Mokoena’s sale is also likely to be sanctioned by Supersport and a source speaking to The Citizen claims the South Africa u23 international has already spilled the beans on his preferred destination.

Source reveals player preference

“Yeah, it is something he (Mokoena) has spoken about and said he would choose to go to Chiefs. It is for various reasons. One of them is that Chiefs are rebuilding and it is easier to get into the team in such a situation and become part of a long term plan,” said the source.

The source went even further and claims that Mokoena broke his reasons down for wanting to join Chiefs over Sundowns.

Reasons given for preference

“There are also a lot of his national junior teams peers of his in that Chiefs team like (Njabulo) Blom, (Nkosingiphile) Ngcobo and others. This will make it easier for him to adapt there,”

Chiefs have been busy in the market, and have already strengthened their midfield with the likes of loan returnee Given Thibedi, worst kept secret Phathutshedzo Nange and Cole Alexander. So far, they have only released 10-year club veteran Willard Katsande to a midfield which is slowly becoming congested.

Where would Mokoena fit?

Now with talk that Mbule’s move to Chiefs is also edging closer, it then remains to be seen whether it would be realistic for Chiefs to sign both players from Supersport in the same window. Chiefs are also reportedly interested in beating Supersport to the signing of free agent and former Golden Arrowns midfield Seth Parusnath who stopped training with the Pretoria outfit last week.
