Kaizer Chiefs latest | I don’t think Gavin Hunt was happy there – Khan

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan has admitted he was surprised by the club’s decision to terminate Gavin Hunt‘s contract.

Hunt was shown the exit door on Friday following a series of poor results that have left them 11th on the log, and five points above the relegation zone.

Khan feels the match that got Hunt fired was the Black Leopards game where Chiefs lost 2-1 in Thohoyandou last.

“It was a bit of a surprise for me, with two league games remaining and with them being in the semifinals,” Khan told The Citizen.

“I don’t know what is Chiefs’ thinking, whether they were looking at starting their preparation (for next season), and with Gavin having not done well in the Premiership,” he said.

“After the Leopards game. I think that was what broke the camel’s back. They had lost to the bottom three [teams on the log].”

Nonetheless, Khan doesn’t think Hunt was happy at Chiefs, saying his interviews, where he constantly complained about the lack of players, were proof enough.

“I don’t think Hunt was happy there. You could see from the interviews he gave that he wasn’t happy,” claimed Khan.

“He always mentioned the lack of players, and not being able to sign because of the ban they had,” he said.

Furthermore, Khan believes Hunt had the backing of the Chiefs management until it became clear that finishing outside the top-eight bracket was a reality the club was facing.

“I felt for a long time management were behind him, but when it looked like they would not make the top eight and could be pulled in to the play offs (that changed),” concluded Khan.
