Move over Madrid, Spain has a new No 1.

Real Madrid have been dethroned as the world’s most valuable club in the latest Forbes list, while Manchester United have fallen out of the top three.

Forbes released its annual list of the world’s most valuable football clubs and, for the first time in 16 years, neither English Premier League side Manchester United nor La Liga giants Real Madrid feature at the top.

The top spot had been monopolised by those two teams for the previous 16 years, with Real Madrid taking it five times and Manchester United on 11 occasions.

The honour now belongs to another Spanish club, Barcelona, who, at a value of $4.76 billion, have narrowly pipped Los Blancos to the top spot.

This comes despite the ongoing saga surrounding superstar Lionel Messi’s future.

Real Madrid trail their arch-rivals with a reported value of $4.75 billion ahead of reigning European champions Bayern Munich on $4.215 billion.

Manchester United are still England’s most valuable club at $4.2 billion, although that gap has been closed by Liverpool, who rank fifth ($4.2 billion).

Four of the remaining five spots are occupied by teams from England’s top flight – Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – with the quartet separated only by ninth-placed French side Paris Saint-Germain.

The world’s 20 most valuable soccer teams are worth an average of $2.28 billion apiece, an increase of 30% from two years ago.
