LOOK: Sinkhole swallows Cape Town motorist’s car
How’s your luck? The driver of this Volkswagen Polo will be wishing they elected for a lie-in on Tuesday morning, as their Freedom Day got off to a chaotic start in Cape Town. A sinkhole swallowed up the front end of the car just before 8:30.
Freedom Day for who? Sinkhole swallows car in Cape Town
The incident took place at the Buitenkant Street intersection. Miserable conditions eventually forced this section of the road to give way, plunging the motorist forward. The front tyres of the vehicle ended up stuck in the sinkhole, leaving both the occupant and the traffic behind them utterly bemused.

The incident has been confirmed by both the City of Cape Town and a prominent road safety network, 1SecondLater. The recovery work has already begun, but the nightmare may only just be starting for residents in Vredehoek. Fresh from being at the mercy of the large-scale Cape Town fires last week, locals are now facing water outages on Tuesday:

Burst pipes have been reported in the upmarket Fresnaye area, with the aptly-named De Wet Road (and its connecting suburbs) now encountering outages:
