Soweto derby: Itumeleng Khune OUT due to Covid-19 funeral protocols

Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has confirmed that goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune will play no part in Sunday’s Soweto derby due to Covid-19 protocols.

Kick-off on Sunday, 21 March at the FNB Stadium is scheduled for 15:00.

Kaizer Chiefs are set to face rivals Orlando Pirates for a fourth time this season – and will be looking to avoid a fourth straight derby defeat under Hunt.

Hunt confirmed in a press conference on Thursday that he will be without the services of Itumeleng Khune, who remains out of action since the tragic passing of his sister a fortnight ago.

“Ja, Khune is not available,” Hunt confirmed.

“He’s still going through all the [Covid-19] protocols of when you come back after obviously having been at a funeral and that, so he won’t be available.”

In addition, Kaizer Chiefs will be missing three more key players.

Lebogang Manyama is suspended, while Leonardo Castro and Khama Billiat will also be missing due to injury.

A couple of other unnamed players are recovering from niggles and are in a race against time to be fit for what will be the 100th Soweto derby.
