Luis Suarez maintained his remarkable form in front of goal this season when he netted a brace in Atletico Madrid’s 2-2 La Liga draw with Celta Vigo on Monday.

In doing so, Suarez extended his lead at the top of the league’s goalscoring charts for the season with 16 goals in 17 appearances, which saw him break a record set by former Real Madrid star Ronaldo in 2009.

No player in the league’s history has reached 16 goals in a faster period for a new club than Suarez has done for Atletico Madrid this season.

The 34-year-old moved from Barcelona at the start of the campaign.

Luis Suarez is now three goals clear of Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri and former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi in the race for this season’s award.

Atletico Madrid have opened up a yawning eight-point lead atop the standings having played one match fewer than their nearest challengers Barcelona and Real Madrid.
