Tropical Storm Eloise leaves ‘trail of destruction’ across Limpopo [pics]

Tropical Storm Eloise has made landfall in Limpopo on Sunday morning, causing widespread flooding and destruction across the province. The extreme weather system has also sparked chaos on the roads, with several major routes – and many around Kruger National Park – now closed off:

  • All gravel roads around Mopani are closed.
  • Boulders, Shipandani are not accessible.
  • Mopani to Phalaborwa road has been closed – motorists will have to drive via Letaba to Phalaborwa.
  • All gravel roads and H13-1 tar road in Nxanatseni (Far North) are closed due to flooding.
  • Tsendze Bridge on H14 is currently underwater.
  • H14 closed from Phalaborwa.

Destruction caused in Limpopo by Tropical Storm Eloise

Trees have fallen on busy commuter routes, and entire bridges have been washed away. Limpopo is set to bear the brunt of Tropical Storm Eloise, and the relentless rainfall has caused problems for the provincial disaster management teams.

Flood warnings, road closures across Limpopo

Meanwhile, the Road Safety Network was compelled to issue the following warning on Sunday. There has been widespread flooding in Tshakuma, with Senzi and the local market badly affected by the onset of Eloise.

“FLOODING WARNING IN THE VHEMBE: Flooding has been reported in the Tshakhuma area called Senzi, below Tshakhuma market. Low water bridges flooded have also been flooded.”
