COVID-19: SA cases rise by 21 000, KZN faced with 80 000 active cases
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, on Thursday 7 January, announced that the confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa had risen to 1 170 590. Mkhize also reported a staggering daily increase of 20 999.
An updated death toll of 31 809 was also reported. A total of 6 967 478 tests have been conducted to date with 69 271 new tests reported. There have also been 938 216 recoveries thus far.
In terms of active cases, KwaZulu-Natal is leading with more than 80 000. The Western Cape follows with 41 000 active cases and Gauteng thereafter with 39 400 active cases.
LATEST COVID-19 CASES BY PROVINCE AS OF THURSDAY 7 JANUARY
The following confirmed COVID-19 cases have been detected in each province as of Thursday:
- Eastern Cape – 177 314 cases
- Free State – 64 925 cases;
- Gauteng – 315 738 cases;
- KwaZulu-Natal – 236 177 cases;
- Limpopo – 32 493 cases;
- Mpumalanga – 41 927 cases;
- North West – 44 255 cases;
- Northern Cape – 26 701 cases; and
- Western Cape – 231 060 cases
- Unknown – 0 cases.

The following confirmed COVID-19-related deaths have been detected in each province as of Thursday:
- Eastern Cape – 8 362 deaths;
- Free State – 2 238 deaths;
- Gauteng – 5 998 deaths;
- KwaZulu-Natal – 5 002 deaths;
- Limpopo – 647 deaths;
- Mpumalanga – 671 deaths;
- North West – 648 deaths;
- Northern Cape – 421 deaths;
- Western Cape – 7 822 deaths.

Mkhize announced the latest COVID-19 recoveries as follows:
- Eastern Cape – 162 039 recoveries;
- Free State – 55 821 recoveries;
- Gauteng – 270 340 recoveries;
- KwaZulu-Natal – 150 519 recoveries;
- Limpopo – 23 861 recoveries;
- Mpumalanga – 34 828 recoveries;
- North West – 35 553 recoveries;
- Northern Cape – 23 441 recoveries; and
- Western Cape – 181 814 recoveries.

VACCINE ROLLOUT
Also on Thursday, Mkhize announced that health workers in SA would receive a jab of the highly anticipated COVID-19 vaccine. Mkhize said South Africa will be receiving one million doses in January 2021 and 500 000 doses in February from the Serum Institute of India (SII).
