Biden certified US Election winner – as Trump finally ‘concedes defeat’
US lawmakers on Thursday formally certified Joe Biden as the winner of the presidential election, clearing the way for his inauguration on January 20. The marathon session in the Senate was disrupted by challenges to the votes – and the shameful scenes sparked by radical Trump rioters who stormed Capitol Hill – but it seems the president has conceded.
Biden certified, and after months of waiting, Trump finally promises a ‘peaceful transition’
Republican Vice President Mike Pence certified the Electoral College count of 306 electors in favor of the Democrat against 232 in favor of outgoing Republican President Donald Trump. The tally followed a joint session of the House and Senate that managed to conclude its business, despite the violence and mayhem that was brought to the government.
Donald Trump, still bitter about losing the US Election fairly, issued a statement via a spokesperson on Wednesday morning. The outgoing president was placed on a temporary social media ban, after he posted a message to his supporters that encouraged their awful behaviour. For the first time, Trump has officially promised an ‘orderly transition’.
Donald Trump officially concedes – full statement
“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th.”
“I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again!”

“Respect the democratic process”
As reported by AFP, US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Thursday called the violence by supporters of President Donald Trump who stormed the US Capitol building “unacceptable” and said it was “time to respect the democratic process”. During a joint appearance in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Mnuchin said:
“These actions are unacceptable and must stop… Now is the time for our nation to come together as one and to respect the democratic process in the US.”
