ANC councillor arrested on New Year’s Eve for alleged drunk driving

An African National Congress (ANC) councillor was arrested on New Year’s Eve for alleged drunk driving in Cape Town. In a statement released by the ANC caucus on Friday, it said it was shocked to learn of the arrest.

The arrest not only came on New Year’s Eve but also amid Level 3 lockdown which has prohibited the sale of alcohol until 15 January 2021. The new lockdown level has also instituted a 21:00 curfew in the Western Cape.

ANC COUNCILLOR CUFFED FOR ALLEGED DRUNK DRIVING

According to eNCA, the councillor was not only caught under the influence of alcohol but he was also believed to have been found outside past curfew in Bothasig, Cape Town.

“It is alleged that the [councillor] was arrested for being under the influence of alcohol while driving,” said ANC Caucus Spokesperson Fiona Abrahams.

“As the ANC we take the matter very serious and believe that the law must take its course and the person be brought to book. We also believe that the law applies to everyone irrespective of the position you hold in society” added Abrahams.

The ANC caucus will escalate the matter to the ANC REC for further investigation and possible disciplinary action against the councillor concerned.

EFF IN HOT WATER FOR FESTIVE SEASON VIDEOS

While an ANC councillor has been arrested for alleged drunk driving and allegedly breaking the rules of curfew, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has been criticised for mingling with a number of people over the holidays despite President Cyril Ramaphosa and government’s Level 3 instructions.

In videos that were distributed on Wednesday, Malema and other members of the EFF could be seen dancing in close proximity to others with little face masks involved.

Following criticism, the EFF responded by defending their position. “Both beautiful events of Black Love were of immediate family, attended by the nine children of Koko Sarah Malema and all of her grandchildren. They were outdoors and in well-ventilated spaces – as decreed by the ‘prepaid president’ of South Africa,” the EFF said on Twitter.

EFF spokesperson Vuyani Pambo also jumped to the CIC’s defence saying; “Malema is with his family… Come on – ask the real questions. Where are the 20 000 ventilators, nine months later? Where is the R500 billion [COVID-19 relief funds]?”
