SA traffic: Fatal bus crashes cause road closures on busy N1, N3 routes

Twin bus crashes on two of South Africa’s busiest routes have forced several road closures in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Both the N1 and the N3 have seen devastating accidents, with one death reported so far and dozens of injuries confirmed. The incidents occurred on one of the busiest days for ‘festive season traffic’.

The N1 North is currently experiencing a set of road closures near the Ingwe Hotel, outside Makhado en route to Musina. Over 20 injuries have been recorded here, and motorists are being urged to use an alternative route:

Meanwhile, road safety agency Arrive Alive confirmed that the fatal smash at Van Reenen’s pass involved a bus and truck, ensuring that the damage in the head-on collision was extensive. The N3, initially closed for hours, has since reopened:

“Following a serious crash involving a bus and a truck in the early hours of the morning, the entire N3 is was temporarily closed near the Caltex Garage at Van Reenen. One fatality and seven serious injuries have been reported. Traffic was stacked at the scene while recovery took place. The road eventually re-opened just after 07:30.”
