SA Medical Association calls for stricter lockdown measures

The South African Medical Association (SAMA) is calling for tighter and stricter lockdown restrictions following an uncontrollable spiral in COVID-19 infections. Not only has the country surpassed one million infections but the daily rate sits nearly at 15 000 cases.

While some have been calling for lockdown Level 5, others don’t see the need for a lockdown at all. SAMA, however, is calling for a sort of hybrid, whereby there is a specific focus placed on social gatherings and alcohol sales.

CALLS FOR STRICTER LOCKDOWN MEASURES

SAMA National Chairperson Angelique Coetzee told The South African that they are not calling for Level 2 lockdown, nor are they calling for Level 5 lockdown. They are simply calling for harsher restrictions on social gatherings and alcohol. Coetzee said the number of people allowed at places like nightclubs, shebeens and malls should be heavily reduced. She also said church services should be held outside where there is ample ventilation.

Coetzee said there should also be an alcohol ban over weekends as most of the trauma cases come in over the weekends. She said this would then alleviate pressure on the hospitals. Coetzee also said there should be consequences for those who do not adhere to safety protocols and regulations. She said action should be taken, whereby fines are imposed or community work is done.

Coetzee said it’s by time those who do not listen, take responsibility for their actions. While SAMA calls for harsher restrictions, it said a return to Level 5 lockdown, on the other hand, would be simply unsustainable.

WHEN WILL RAMAPHOSA ADDRESS THE NATION?

We now know that when President Cyril Ramaphosa addresses the nation, we can expect harsher or lighter lockdown measures. After a week of new developments which has painted a bleak picture, it is very likely that stricter lockdown measures will follow. The question is, when will Ramaphosa call a family meeting?

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, in an interview on Morning Live, said he could not disclose when Ramaphosa would take to the podium but did say there are deliberations with the National coronavirus Command Council (NCCC), ministers, stakeholders and traditional leaders. He said once deliberations come to a close, the president will call a national address.

When asked what restrictions would be put in place, Mkhize said he could not say, however, he did point out that those who encourage others not to take COVID-19 seriously should be ignored.
