Four killed in road crashes in KZN and Gauteng
Two people were killed while four others injured when the vehicle they were travelling in veered out of control and rolled on the R600 in Champagne Valley in the Winterton area in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday afternoon, ER24 reports.
ER paramedics arrived on the scene at around d 15:00.
“Upon assessment, it was found that a vehicle left the roadway, rolled, and landed in the river below. One of the patients was found lying on the embankment and showing no signs of life.”
One other person was found with fatal injuries lying next to the vehicle.
Both were declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
Paramedics declared the patient dead at the scene. One other patient managed to climb up to the roadside and was found to be in a serious condition,” she said.
Three other people were rescued from the vehicle in the river and were found to have sustained minor to serious injuries.
They were treated on the scene and then ferried to hospital for further treatment.
Fatal Gauteng crash
Earlier, ER24 spokesperson Ineke van Huyssteen said two people were killed and four other people sustained serious injuries when two vehicle’s collided on the R28 in Westonaria on the West Rand in Gauteng late Friday night.
When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 11.30 pm, the Gauteng EMS were already in attendance.
“Paramedics found two people who had sustained fatal injuries. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead at the scene. Four others were found to have sustained serious injuries,” she said.
Decline in road deaths
Releasing the preliminary festive season fatality statistics on 22 December in Panorama East, Transport Minister Mbalula said six provinces have recorded a decline in road fatalities.
Mbalula said 690 people lost their lives on South African roads from 1 December to 20 December 2020, compared to 732 people who died over the same period last year.
A total of 109 529 motorists were issued with traffic fines for various offences. On the other hand, a total of 2 415 vehicles were scrapped, while another 1 801 vehicles were impounded,” Mbalula said.
“A total of 2 111 motorists were arrested for various offenses. The arrests include 896 people that were arrested for drunken driving, 336 for speeding, and 588 warrants of arrests for outstanding traffic fines were served.”
