Black Motion rise to the occasion to see in 2021 with Red Bull Rendezvous
2021 MTV Africa Music Award (MAMA) nominated house music duo Black Motion has celebrated their 10th anniversary by performing a decade of their hits with Red Bull Rendezvous at Three Rondavels in Graskop, Mpumalanga.
The pre-recorded performance will be broadcasted on SABC2 on Thursday 31 December at 23:30 and has also been available live to watch on the Red Bull site since 18 December.
The documentary also features guest artists who are guaranteed to entertain SABC2 viewers as they wait to cross over into 2021.
A DECADE OF BLACK MOTION
Robert Mahosana, known as DJ Murda, and percussionist Thabo “Smol” Mabogwane together formed Black Motion in early 2010. The duo gained popularity with their hit Banane Mavoko in 2011, featuring Jah Rich.
The pair is signed to Kalawa Jazmee and Universal Records and released their kwaito/ Afrohouse debut album, Talking To The Drums, in 2011.
The duo was recently nominated for a MAMA 2021 in the “Alone Together”: Best Lockdown Performance category.
PERFORMING AT THREE RONDAVELS
The almost 54-minute long show was filmed at the picturesque Three Rondavels and the duo is seen performing a trio of instrumental tracks to kick things off — starting with The Mother of Earth followed by New Ways and Brazillian Drums.
“It’s a dream come true, performing on a mountain,” said Smol to Red Bull.
Black Motion’s manager Moses Mokgoko said that the Three Rondavels heritage site is directly linked to the music the group makes.
“With heritage come ancestors, with ancestors come Africa. So you combine the whole three together and the set-up speaks to the music that the guys are doing,” said Mokgoko to Red Bull.
THE MORE THE MERRIER
The show also features classic soul artist Brenden Praise, electronic music artist Xoli M, East London-born composer and singer Msaki and pop singer Nokwazi.
Brenden Praise will be seen joining Black Motion to perform three of their joint tracks together on stage – Ome, Joy Joy and Africana. Joy Joy (off their 2018 Moya Wa Taola album) boasts platinum status.
Xoli performs Set Me Free and Rainbow alongside Black Motion and Nokwazi performs Imali and Fortune Teller.
THE HEALERS: THE LAST CHAPTER
The Healers: The Last Chapter is Black Motion’s sixth and latest album released in September this year. This three-hour-and-48-minute-long album consists of a whopping 40 tracks.
Fans initially speculated that the album’s title implied a split. However the talented duo assured fans that this just means they are closing their 10-year chapter.
