Watch: Julius Malema shows off his ‘karate skills’ ahead of Senekal visit

Julius Malema has been courting controversy on Thursday, ahead of his visit to Senekal tomorrow. The EFF leader is staging a counter-protest against the violence seen inside the Free State town’s courthouse last week – and the self-appointed CIC has joked that he may have a karate-themed surprise up his sleeve…

Julius Malema talks about upcoming EFF protest in Senekal

Although the firebrand politician says he wants a peaceful protest, he has been more than happy to talk up the possibility of needing to use ‘self-defence’. It remains to be seen how liberally this term will be used, given that EFF supporters and members of the farming community will both be attending an absolute powder-keg of a demonstration.

However, Malema threw a curveball for the Newzroom Afrika audience: He maintained that self-defence ‘does not have to be a gun’, and mused that some protesters joining his camp could be karate blackbelts…

“I won’t reveal my defence strategy. I can exercise self-defence, which is in the Constitution. But when a black man engages in self-defence, you don’t know if he’s got a blackbelt… what if I have one? – *karate impressions* – Self-defence is not a gun. I will go to Senekal to defend myself, and you will see what I mean there.”

However, are we convinced that Malema himself is a master of martial arts? On this evidence, we’ll have to say no:

Senekal trial – latest news and updates

An increased police presence will be in attendance at the Senekal courthouse on Friday. The trial of two suspected farm murderers – which was marred by violent protests last week – resumes in the morning. SAPS say they will pull out all the stops to ensure that order remains intact… even if everybody starts kung-fu fighting.
