Senzo Meyiwa: Five suspects named – despite ‘rebelling’ against the court
The Senzo Meyiwa case has taken another dramatic twist on Tuesday, after the five suspects accused of orchestrating the murder of the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper were officially named in court – six years after the crime was committed. However, this isn’t where the story ends – as proceedings were briefly engulfed by chaos.
Senzo Meyiwa murder: Who are the suspects?
The names of the suspects are; Muzikawulahlelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mothobisi Mncube, Mthokosenzi Maphisa, and Sifikuhlenhle Nkani Ntuli. However, all five spectacularly broke ranks with court protocol.
They refused to take to the dock, remaining at the back of the courtroom instead. Several suspects even waived their right to legal support, and strenuously rejected any evidence linking them to this case.
Suspects claim they are being ‘set-up’
Mncube said the police are guilty of ‘bribery’ in naming them as suspects, claiming that he’s been in prison ‘for many years’ prior to this court appearance. Mphisa and Ntuli claimed they didn’t need lawyers because ‘they do not know’ why they have even been asked to show up at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court:
#SenzoMeyiwa JUST IN: Accused number three, Mothobisi Mncube is telling the court he will not enter the dock as he did not murder Senzo Meyiwa, he says they have been in prison for many years. He accuses the police of bribery.

Senzo Meyiwa – charges for the accused
The state alleges the suspects stormed into the house of Kelly Khumalo’s mother, who was in a relationship with the footballer at the time. It’s stated that they entered the home and stole a cell phone, before shooting Meyiwa three times. This version of events, however, has been publicly disputed by both AfriForum and the mother of Senzo Meyiwa.
This what the group have been collectively charged with:
- Murder
- Attempted murder
- Robbery with activating circumstances
- Possession of firearms
- Possession of ammunition
