Air travel: There’s a newcomer to the Johannesburg-Durban route
Durban’s year-round subtropical climate and sunny shores are reason enough to head for the beach. There will soon be a more choice for South Africans when flying between Johannesburg and Durban.
FlySafair and Mango Airlines currently operate the scheduled passenger flights between Johannesburg and Durban.
AFRICA’S BUSIEST AIR PASSENGER ROUTES ARE IN SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa boasted the top two busiest passenger routes on the continent before the national lockdown, which grounded several airlines and forced all domestic airlines to suspend their flights for several months.
The Johannesburg-Cape Town route has been the busiest route on the African continent for several years, with over 30,000 annual scheduled passenger flights between the two cities.
The Johannesburg-Durban route comes in second place, with over 20,000 scheduled commercial flights operating annually on the route.
Since the reopening of provincial borders and the resumption of scheduled passenger flights there have been fewer flights on all domestic routes, with the absence of South African Airways, British Airways (Comair) and Kulula’s flights.
AIRLINK STARTS UP ON THE JOBURG–DURBAN ROUTE
Airlink is an independently-owned South African Airline, which flies to more regional and domestic destinations in Southern Africa, than any other airline. It is a full-service airline whose fares include preflight seating choices, checked baggage and inflight meals.
Airlink will operate flights on the Joburg-Durban route from 5 October. Flights will be operated using an Embraer E-170 aircraft, which seats 74 passengers. Three daily flights will operate between the two cities during the week, and two daily flights will operate on the weekends.
Airlink allows passengers in economy class to carry 20kg of checked baggage and 7kg as cabin baggage. Onboard catering is provided for passengers.
