Watch: KZN freak accident results in fatal truck carnage
A man has been declared dead after his truck crashed into a number of vehicles in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal.
However, a bizarre twist to the story is that there was actually no one behind the wheel, at the time of the accident.
In what Life Response paramedics have described as a freak accident, the 50-year-old man had apparently gotten out of the truck and upon returning, had tried to put it in reverse. He then jumped out of the vehicle, which then began moving, eventually crashing into four vehicles.
The incident is said to have occurred at the intersection of East road and Stapleton road in the Pinetown area.
“The truck collided with four vehicles in the intersection, the driver of the truck got out of his truck and was speaking to metro police when he got back in and tried to reverse his truck, he jumped out of his truck and the truck gained momentum going down Stapleton road pushing the cars with it, the truck drive attempted to stop the truck and when doing so fell out and hit his head on the road,” Life Response paramedics said in a statement.
A video clip captured the accident, first showing the truck colliding with a Citi Golf and the driver attempting to jump into it, presumably to stop it from moving.
“The truck went down (an) embankment and into a residential property causing severe damage to the property and two vehicles inside the property”
Driver not killed by truck
It’s unclear how the man died, however paramedics said he passed away while it was out of control.
“Life Response paramedics attended to the truck driver, and attempted to resuscitate the driver, but sadly he passed away,” they said.
“Fortunately no one else was injured in the initial accident or when the truck went down the embankment”
The cause of the accident is not yet clear and the South African Police Service (SAPS) and metro police were at the scene to investigate.
