South-African Mince Jaffles, a combination not to be missed

You will only get a jaffle in South-Africa and trust me it’s great! Here in South Africa most people go to a festival or a church ‘basaar’ to find and buy this South-African treat.

What is a jaffle?

A jaffle is probably best described as a closed toasted sandwich that has a variety of savoury fillings which is made in an iron cast clamp.

What is to love about a jaffle?

Well, the variety of fillings that you can put in it of course. We’ve tried everything from chicken mayonnaise, cheese and like this recipe: mince.

    Ingredients

    • 2 buttered sliced loafs of bread

    • 1 kg lean beef mince

    • 1 diced onion

    • 1 sliced onion

    • 1 crushed garlic clove

    • salt & pepper

    • 1 rosemary stick

    • 1 teaspoon beef stock

    • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

    • 50 ml water

    • chutney

    • nonstick spray

    • cast iron jaffle irons

    • Gas stove or 1 plate camp burner

    Method

    • In a sauce pan, heat the oil. Brown the onions. Add the mince meat. Season to taste. Add the rosemary stick. Add the garlic. Mix the water and beef stock. add to the mince. Let simmer for 5 minutes and let cool. Remove the rosemary stick.
    • Place the bread buttered side down on a tray. Spoon the cold mince mixture in the middle of the bread. Add a dollop of chutney and 2 onion slices. Cover with another slice bread, butter on outside. Re[peat until mince is finished.
    • Spray the jaffle irons with the non stick spray. Heat the irons on the open gas flames. Insert the first jaffle and close the jaffle iron. Cut the crusts off with a sharp knife. Toast both sides. Remove the jaffle and repeat.
