Nelson Mandela Bay acting municipal manager Mvuleni Mapu arrested
Nelson Mandela Bay acting municipal manager Mvuleni Mapu was arrested by the Hawks at his home in Port Elizabeth on Friday morning 21 August.
Hawks Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation spokesperson Lwando Zenzile confirmed the arrest.
MVULENI MAPU ARRESTED FOR FRAUD AND CORRUPTION
According to Zenzile, Mapu was arrested at his home at 4:55 on Friday morning on allegations of fraud and corruption.
According to HeraldLive, the allegations of fraud and corruption are linked to the human settlements department in which Mapu is a housing director.
Zenzile said a woman was also arrested at her home at around 5:30 on Friday. According to the Hawks, she is a service provider for construction.
Zenzile said Mapu and the woman will appear in the specialised commercial court on Friday. He also said there are more arrests to be made.
According to SABC News journalist Lerato Fekisi, two more Nelson Mandela Metro municipal officials were also arrested.
Former minister of tourism Derek Hanekom commented on the arrest saying:
“Action! That’s what we want to hear! More to come. Enough already of this vile corruption that threatens to erode all our democratic gains and victories.”
SEDIBENG MUNICIPAL MANGER ARRESTED BY THE HAWKS
Just last week Sedibeng Municipal Manager Stanley Khanyile was arrested by the Hawks for fraud, theft and money laundering worth more than R29 million.
According to the Democratic Alliance (DA), it was allegedly committed in the Eastern Cape where he was the Head of the Department for the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development (ECDSD).
Khanyile, the then Chief Director in the office of HOD Vuyokazi Valentia Sangoni and the Director of Umnotho Development Poovandaren Chetty appeared at the King William’s Town Magistrate Court on 14 August. Magistrate Nkosinathi Mjekula granted Chetty R200 000 bail, Khanyile was granted R50 000 bail while Sangoni was granted bail for R20 000.
Khanyile was charged with two counts of contravention of the PFMA and two counts of fraud. Sangoni, on the other hand, was charged with one count of fraud while Chetty faces 16 counts of fraud, 18 counts of theft, and 15 counts of money laundering.
