After mixed fortunes in the PSL midweek, Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch lock horns at Orlando Stadium on Sunday night.

Amakhosi suffered another blip in their title chase on Wednesday, as they were stunned by Bloemfontein Celtic, while Stellies emerged victorious in their derby against Cape Town City the following day.

Focus now shifts to their clash on Sunday, which could have a profound impact on where the PSL title ends up at the end of the season.

The Soweto giants still have a healthy gap at the top of the standings between them and their closest title rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, who failed to capitalise on Wednesday’s slip up, only managing a single point to five points.

For Stellenbosch, the fixture presents a golden opportunity to take up residence in a coveted top-eight spot. Should they remain there, not only would it mark a successful first season in the top flight, but also gives them a chance at an extra piece of silverware next season.

Past meetings 

Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch have met in cup competition, prior to the latter’s ascension to the first tier of South African football.

In their only league encounter, the Glamour Boys blew the newcomers out of the water, winning 4-0 through a brace from the in-form Samir Nurkovic and goals from Dumisani Zuma and Siyabonga Ngezana.

The previous two meetings also went the way of Chiefs, who won 3-0 in their first-ever encounter before registering a 2-1 victory in the next.
