Immobile beats Ronaldo and Lewandowski to Golden Shoe award

Lazio striker Ciro Immobile bagged the coveted 2019/20220 European Golden Shoe award after finding the back of the net 36 times in the Italian Serie A.

The Italian attacker beat heavyweights Robert Lewandowski, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to the annual award. Immobile became only the second player in the history of Italy’s top flight to net 36 goals in a single campaign, equalling Gonzalo Higuain’s record set in 2015/2016.

Golden Shoe points system

The award works based on a points basis rather than on goals alone and are affected by UEFA’s coefficient rankings. Goals get multiplied by a certain figure according to the strength of the league they play in.

Goals in Europe’s toughest leagues are multiplied by a co-efficient of two, whereas goals scored in weaker leagues are multiplied by coefficients of either 1.5 or one.

Ciro Immobile beats Ronaldo to Serie A Golden Boot

With 35 goals in 36 games, Immobile became the top scorer both in Italy’s Serie A and in Europe. Scoring 31 goals, Juventus’ superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was the only player who could have caught the Lazio striker however Ronaldo was rested in Juventus’ final league game of the season.

LaLiga decline?

Immobile’s triumph ends a 13-year LaLiga dominance over the award. It is the first time since 2006/07, when Roma’s Francesco Totti won, that the Golden Shoe has not been won or shared by a La Liga player.
