Champions League: Bayern Munich ease past Lyon to book final spot

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich made light work of Olympique Lyon in their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night.

Bayern Munich have been in emphatic form in the Champions League this season and followed up their historic 8-2 victory over Barcelona in the quarter-finals with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Lyon in the semi-finals.

Bayern Munich took the lead in the 17th minute through a stunning Serge Gnabry goal that rifled into the top corner from the edge of the box. Gnabry was again on hand to extend his side’s lead 10 minutes before half-time, this time with a much easier effort from close range.

Bayern Munich’s prolific striker Robert Lewandowski was not to miss out on a Champions League goal of his own after completing the victory for his side in the 88th minute with a well taken header.

Garcia disappointed with Champions League loss

Lyon manager Rudi Garcia admitted his side failed to stick to their game plan during the first half of their Champions League clash which ultimately saw them conceding two early goals.

“We can be proud of our run and our game, but yes, it is the disappointment that prevails. We lacked success because we have to lead by the score and eventually we are led.” – Garcia said following the Champions League semi-final.

“We have this feeling of injustice that has weighed us down a bit. At 2-0, it’s complicated even if we didn’t give up in the second half. We knew they were going to be very high up and that we had to use the spaces behind their backs as was the case on the opportunities of Memphis and Karl.

“What we didn’t do well in the first-half was to use the ball and move them sideways. We did a lot better in the second-half. When you don’t score, you can’t qualify.”

Flick concerned by his defence

Bayern Munich head coach Hansi Flick is wary of the challenge that lies ahead when his side faces the attacking threat of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in the Champions League final.

“Paris Saint-Germain are a great team, they fought their way into the semi-final and then reached the final. We will analyse some things, we know they have quick players.” Flick said.

“We will look to organise our defence, but we know our biggest strength is putting our opponents under pressure. Thomas is doing a sensational job, that is excellent. I visited him once and I have the opinion that his team is working very well. I’m looking forward to Sunday.”

Bayern Munich will now face Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the 2020 Champions League final on Sunday night in Lisbon.
