Cabbage Pie: an unexpected twist on mac ‘n cheese that works

The amazing aroma of this cabbage pie filled my house, even the neighbours called me up and asked what is that heavenly smell?

The combination of the bacon, cabbage and garlic is so delicious. It forms a crusty layer with the cheese making it extra tasty! This cabbage pie is not far off from mac and cheese and the only real difference in ingredients is the exchange of pasta for cabbage.

A new side dish for any occasion that may even have your neighbours calling for the recipe.

    If you like mac and cheese but don’t need the pasta, try this cabbage pie which is a healthier alternative with all the same goodness!

    Ingredients

    • 500 grams cubed bacon

    • 1 cabbage (whole leaves separated)

    • 2 finely chopped onions

    • 2 eggs

    • 2 crushed garlic cloves

    • 1 teaspoon black pepper

    • 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley

    • 1 cup self raising flour

    • 1 cup milk

    • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese

    Method

    • Pre heat your oven to 180 degrees.
    • Grease an oven dish
    • In a saucepan, boil water.
    • Place the cabbage leaves in the water for only 3 minutes. Repeat until all the leaves has been done.
    • In a bowl, mix the bacon, eggs, garlic and parsley. Add the flour and milk.
    • Place your oven dish empty in the hot oven for 3 minutes.
    • Remove from the oven and start layering, starting with the bacon mixture.
    • Repeat until top layer is mixture.
    • Sprinkle with cheese.
    • Bake for 35 minutes.
