Wedding to a funeral: Somizi’s mother Mary Twala laid to rest

The funeral is being livestreamed on Thursday morning 9 July.

Twala, 80, died peacefully on Saturday 4 July at Parklane Private Hospital in Johannesburg.

Details regarding the cause of death have not been announced, but we all remember the last time she was on our TV screens on Somizi’s Wedding.

Twala shared a very emotional moment with him where it was quite evident that she was not looking well. Somizi mentioned she had had a heart attack a week before and she could not walk him down the aisle.

Despite her age Twala had still been working and her latest project It’s not a Death, it’s a Resurrection premiered earlier this year.

As soon as the media personality confirmed the news of his mother’s passing on social media, a wave of tribute message came flooding in to bid her farewell. The support was not only for the fact that Twala was his mother but also because she also had an strong reputation of her own.

Dynamic trailblazer in her own right

Mama Twala had been in the entertainment industry for a whopping 60 years.

Although she may have not have been as much in the public eye as her flamboyant son, we will remember her for her roles in the many tv shows and movies that she starred in like Sarafina, Yizo Yizo and countless others.

Probably her most memorable appearance was for her chilling role in Ubizo: The Calling. Many kids born in the 1990s are still haunted by her captivating scenes.

These shows have also helped her clinch awards such as a South African Film and Television Award (Safta) (2015), and an Africa Movie Academy award (2011). President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2019 bestowed her with the highest honour in the land, the Order of Ikhamanga.

Difficult time for Somizi and Mohale

Most of the messages of support sent love to Somizi and his family, but his most immediate family member, husband Mohale Motaung, received backlash when he asked for prayers at this difficult time.

There were nasty comments, dragging him and questioning his role in his relationship with Somizi.

Cooking show outcry

Drama is something that the pair is used to, however.

Just recently Somizi was the centre of attention after announcing his upcoming cooking show which was followed by an outcry for fresh and new faces on our TV screens.

Nonetheless, that should not detract from honouring the life of his mother.

Rest in peace Mary Twala. Thank you for filling our homes with laughter and keeping us thoroughly entertained.
