Watch: CPT motorists drive wrong way up the R300 during protests

Although widespread plans to disrupt Cape Town traffic has so far failed to come to fruition on Monday, one protest did manage to cause absolute chaos on the R300. Motorists were confronted by a shocking sight, as vehicles careered towards them while driving the wrong way up the major carriageway.

Cape Town traffic: R300 protests spark u-turns en masse

The R300 South between Stellenbosch Arterial and Van Riebeeck was closed due to protesting earlier today. Tyres had blockaded the roads, as demonstrators also set fire to the debris.

The protesters have been busy in areas such as Kraaifontein and Delft this week, as anger over land spilled onto the streets. Riot police have been patrolling the regions, and threats from civil activists Gatvol Capetonian to block-off key routes and roads into the city went largely unfulfilled.

However, those on the R300 this morning drew the short straw. A cavalcade of vehicles – including taxis – were also used to beef-up the blockage. That prompted some incredibly risky moves from frustrated drivers:

Cape Town traffic: Road reopens after protests

Motorists weave in and out of the oncoming Cape Town traffic, as they head the wrong way up the R300. Cars are forced to pull into the hard shoulder and drive at a snail’s pace, in order to avoid any nasty collisions.

Just after 9:00, the carriageway was cleared and the road had opened up to traffic once more. Those planning to travel on the R300 at any point on Monday can now go about their business as per usual, but should there be any changes throughout the day, we’ll have the updates here.
