Live stream: Government to address the nation on Thursday 4 June
Cabinet are set to address South Africans for the first time since their lockdown laws were declared ‘invalid’ earlier this week. It’s been announced that Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu will lead the briefing, which will be delivered on television and via an online live stream – but what time does it all kick-off?
It’s also set to be the first time the government has briefed the media – and in turn, the nation – in this fashion since we entered Level 3 of lockdown. This latest phase of eased restrictions was meant to make life easy for our politicians. Instead, it’s opened up the gates to chaos.
The ANC rulemakers have been given 14 business days to draft lockdown regulations which align with the Bill of Rights. The Pretoria High Court ruled that many of the rules we’ve been adhering to simply ‘do not pass the rationality test’, with limits on liquor and cigarettes being identified as problem areas.

Lockdown laws latest
However, during this grace period, the rules of Alert Level 3 remain in place. But that’s not all the government has to contend with: The current State of Disaster laws come to an end next weekend, and those in power will have to decide how exactly they plan to extend the lockdown in face of mounting litigation.
Meanwhile, Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is also facing an extreme amount of pressure. The NCCC leader is facing “three or four” separate legal challenges, all of which have exploded into life this week.
What time will Mthembu deliver his speech?
We’re expecting this briefing from Jackson Mthembu to clarify the issues mentioned above, and give citizens clearer directions on the status of our current lockdown laws from 16:00 on Thursday
