Siya Kolisi shifts foundation’s focus to fight against COVID-19

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has, through his foundation, had to deflect his energies towards the fight against COVID-19, he revealed on Saturday.

The Stormers flanker was due to launch the Siya Kolisi Foundation sometime in 2020, but the year has now been synonymous with the outbreak of the deadly global pandemic.

Having been vocal in advising South Africans to adhere to lockdown regulations, the Rugby World Cup-winning skipper, along with various businesses, have put their money where their mouth is and are making donations towards curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

In an Instagram post, Kolisi revealed that much of his foundation’s energies will be channelled towards lessening the impact the pandemic could have on underprivileged communities.

“Whilst the Kolisi Foundation was months from launching with different projects in mind, we couldn’t ignore the seriousness of COVID-19 so began to focus our energy and resources on supporting our frontline workers – supplying sanitisers and reusable masks,” “We are thankful that we have been able to lean on our incredible partners to support the project and will look to partner with other established organisations in the future to guarantee our work is as impactful as possible, addressing hunger and other areas close to our heart.”

In its response to the rapid spread of the coronavirus, the Siya Kolisi Foundation has already pledged a donation of more than 4 000 litres of hand sanitiser, 400 reusable masks and goggles in Khayelitsha and Livingstone hospitals in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth respectively.

This comes just after the former had recorded its first cases of COVID-19.

As of Friday, South Africa has reported 1 505 confirmed infections, with the death toll sitting at seven.

A big shout out to @afribizentfoundation , @rocnationsports, @redbullza , Aspen, @adidasza and my dear friend Vincent. We can all make a difference by staying home. Keep washing hands for a period longer than 20 seconds.♥️🇿🇦 @rachel_kolisi @kolisi_foundation
