Supersport United youngster thrilled to make a move to Europe
Supersport United’s Luke le Roux has left the club on a European adventure after signing for Allsvenskan side Varbergs BoIS.
Le Roux could become the 16th South African to play in the Swedish top-flight following in the footsteps of the likes of Siyabonga Nomvethe, May Mahlangu and Tokelo Rantie.
From Supersport United to Sweden
The 19-year-old midfielder signed a four-year deal to become the third South African talent on the books of the Swedish outfit who gained promotion to the top-flight in 2019.
“I am thrilled to be joining Varbergs BoIS. I have really enjoyed my time at the club thus far and everyone has made me feel at home,” Le Roux told Kickoff.com.
“I am grateful for the opportunity SuperSport gave me and am now looking forward to the next chapter of playing in the Allsvenskan.”
The club themselves suggested that Le Roux’s signing had a lot to do with the form of another 19-year-old South African midfielder Keanin Ayer Boya, who played 29 matches for the club in the 2019 Superettan season helping the smalltown club earn a spot in the Swedish top-flight.

South African connections to Sweden are strong
Varberg have also taken another South African youngster Tashreeq Matthews on loan from Borussia Dortmund.
“We got Luke Le Roux recommended to us during the summer of 2019,” the club explained in a statement issued on their website.
“During the two weeks Luke was with and acquainted, Luke made a very good impression with the coaches, both on the field and off the field.
“Since we already have Keanin Ayer who is from South Africa in Varberg’s BoIS FC, it has facilitated the good references for the club with some of South Africa’s U-team talents.
“In the short term, we see that the players have such good qualities that they can settle into the starting eleven almost immediately and in the long term that we sign longer agreements that show that we believe in the players.”
National team coaches will take note
Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki and under-23 coach David Notoane are likely to monitor Le Roux’s progress in Sweden keenly having seen Mahlangu and Rantie blossom as players plying their trade in the Scandinavian nation.
Le Roux becomes the third player eligible to play for Bafana Bafana to move to Sweden this year after Matthews and Bantu Mzwakali, who joined second-tier IK Brage from Ajax Cape Town.
