Kaizer Chiefs looking to emulate PSL rivals in conquering Africa

Kaizer Chiefs are well on track for a return to continental competition next season, and defender Daniel Cardoso says the goal is to go all the way.

With 11 league games remaining for Amakhosi in the ongoing season, they managed to open up a significant gap on their rivals in the standings, which now stands at nine points ahead of the nearest title contenders.

However, they have lagged behind is in terms of success in Caf competition, where they have been plagued by early exits, and did not make the cut for the current campaign, after only finishing ninth in the domestic league.

As part of South Africa’s so-called “big three”, along with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, Chiefs are now looking to emulate their rivals, who have both won the prestigious Caf Champions League – earning a star on their respective badges.

“Every trophy we compete in, we want to win it,” Cardoso said, as quoted by KickOff.

“Orlando Pirates have a star on their badge. Mamelodi Sundowns have a star on their badge. We also want that star on our badge.

“When we last played in the CAF Champions League we didn’t have a good experience but we learned from that.”

Daniel Cardoso sets out personal goals

Cardoso has recently signed a contract extension with Kaizer Chiefs, which sees him tied to the club until the end of the 2020/21 season.

The 30-year-old have been one of the star players in the club’s resurgence, contributing five goals across competitions, mostly from the penalty spot, with four coming in the league.

He has set his sights on netting even more before the season concludes in May.

“At the beginning of the season, I set the goal of 10 goals. We still have 11 games to go. Hopefully, I will be able to achieve my goal. It doesn’t matter if all my goals are penalties, a goal is a goal.”

Chiefs were inactive over the weekend, which gave them a lengthy rest period ahead of their next fixture, the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 match against first division outfit Royal Eagles on Saturday, 8 February.

The Glamour Boys next run out in the league seven days later, when they host Maritzburg United – one of the few clubs to defeat them this season – at FNB Stadium.
