Super Rugby 2020: Teams, fixture dates, times, results and standings

Super Rugby returns for the 2020 season with the best of Southern Hemisphere rugby doing battle between February and June in South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina and Japan.

Super Rugby 2020: Tournament overview

Four continents will see 18 rounds of action throughout the regular season, with 15 franchises competing to be crowned Super Rugby champions in June.

The all-conquering Crusaders are out to make it four titles in a row having secured a hat-trick of final victories in 2019.

South Africa’s four sides, meanwhile, are out to build on the Springboks’ Rugby World Cup final success to end nine years of Australasian dominance since the Bulls lifted the trophy in 2010.

The fresh-faced Pretoria franchise once again fly the South African flag alongside the Lions, Sharks and Stormers, who are once again joined in their conference by the Jaguares.

Australia are again represented by the Brumbies, Rebels, Reds and Waratahs, with Japan’s Sunwolves making their final scheduled appearance in the tournament in 2020.

Out to topple the Crusaders in the New Zealand pool are the Blues, Chiefs, Highlanders and Hurricanes.

With a couple of wildcard places once again available for the knockout stages, Super Rugby is set to go to the wire in the battle for the quarter-finals and beyond.

Super Rugby competition history

Since the competition expanded to 12 sides in 1996, New Zealand’s Crusaders have been a dominant force with ten Super Rugby title wins and a further four final appearances.

The Kiwis go into the 2020 campaign having lifted the Super Rugby trophy three times on the spin, seeing off the Jaguares in the 2019 final after successive victories over the Lions.

South Africa’s Bulls are the country’s most successful side and only Super Rugby overall winners, with a golden spell of three titles in four years between 2007 – 2010.

Australia’s Brumbies were crowned Super Rugby kings in 2004 and 2001, with the Waratahs and Reds both claiming a title apiece Down Under.

The Highlanders and Hurricanes have each lifted a single trophy, in 2015 and 2016 respectively, while the Chiefs claimed back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013.

New Zealand’s dominance of the competition is further highlighted by the Blues’ three Super Rugby titles, coming in 1996, 1997 and most recently in 2003.

Super Rugby 2020 Format

Tournament Duration: Friday 31 January – Saturday 20 June 2020.

Each team plays 16 regular season fixtures, home and away against each conference opponent plus eight cross-conference fixtures. The top two sides in each conference plus two best-placed wildcards will progress to the knockout stage, with the quarter-finals taking place on the first weekend of June.

The semi-finals take place on the following weekend, with the Super Rugby 2020 final taking place on Saturday 20 June.
