Stormers Super Rugby 2020: Fixtures, results, kick off times, squad and scores

From ‘nearly men’ to ‘not nearly good enough’, the Stormers go into the 2020 Super Rugby season desperate to put to bed the misery of back-to-back campaigns in the doldrums.

They do so under the nationwide affliction of South Africa’s player exodus, albeit less affected than their fellow SA franchises despite Eben Etzebeth and Damian de Allende heading for the exit door.

The Cape Town side received a boost with captain Siya Kolisi committing to stay in the country after elevating himself to icon status by skippering the Springboks to 2019 Rugby World Cup glory in Japan.

While Kolisi remains a constant, there are changes afoot elsewhere with John Dobson taking over as coach for 2020 as part of a major backroom reshuffle.

The Stormers will also be saying goodbye to Newlands Stadium at the end of the season, as they finally prepare to make their move to the Cape Town Stadium in 2021.

Stormers Super Rugby history

The Stormers have bothered the very best throughout Super Rugby history without ever managing to lift the trophy themselves.

An all-South Africa final with the Bulls is the closest they have come in their only showpiece appearance to date, with their northern rivals winning at Soweto’s Orlando Stadium in 2010.

A pair of semi-final defeats followed at the end of the next two seasons at the hands of the Crusaders and the Sharks.

The Cape Town franchise further cemented their ‘nearly men’ tag with knockout heartbreak in 2015, 2016 and 2017 before enduring a tough couple of campaigns at the wrong end of the overall log.

They have topped the South African conference on three occasions: in 2015, 2012 and 2011.

With future Springbok coaches Rassie Erasmus and Allister Coetzee among those to have coached the Cape side in the past, the Stormers continue their search for the perfect formula in front of what is frequently the largest support in Super Rugby.
