Kaizer Chiefs launch special 50th anniversary jersey

Celebrating 50 years of existence, Kaizer Chiefs have launched a new jersey, which will serve as its third kit in the ongoing season.

The Soweto Giants were founded in 1970 by Orlando Pirates legend, Kaizer Motaung, and would go on to become the country’s most supported club.

Now celebrating their half-century anniversary, they have marked the occasion by introducing an all-black number with a distinct gold trim to go with their psychedelic home strip and the retro away jersey.

Chiefs marketing manager Jessica Motaung said the jersey was a tribute to the club’s heritage.

“Turning 50 is a remarkable landmark for us as Kaizer Chiefs. We have worked tirelessly through the years to make the club the institution it is today. The new jersey pays tribute to the club’s strong heritage and rich history. We truly stand on the shoulders of giants, as our chairman always says, and we look forward to celebrating this year and milestone with the club’s supporters.”

According to the club, the 50 in the special anniversary logo represents the “long, winding and often turbulent road” it has travelled over the decades.

“The circular ‘zero’ represents the unity Kaizer Chiefs have always stood for on and off the field, while the arrow in the logo points to the future evolution of the club.”

The new kit will make its debut on the home game against Highlands Park on Wednesday night, where Chiefs fans will be allowed free entrance into FNB Stadium.

It is available for sale as of Monday, 6 January.

Big year for Amakhosi

Kaizer Chiefs top the standings on the halfway mark of the league campaign after claiming 11 wins in 15 matches.

Their last outing was, however, a disappointing one as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Supersport United at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.

This has narrowed the gap between themselves and Mamelodi Sundowns to a less daunting four points.

With a tricky prospect lying in wait in the form of the Lions of the North, Amakhosi will have to go into the all-important fixture without Serbian striker Samir Nurkovic, who picked up his fourth yellow card of the season, triggering a one-match suspension.

Chiefs are looking to mark their 50th-anniversary celebrations by claiming their first title since clinching the league crown in 2015 under former Bafana coach, Stuart Baxter.

The game against Highlands Park will kick off at 19:30 (SAST).
