Gauteng weather: Storms and heavy rainfall expected this week

After just barely surviving three heatwaves, Gauteng residents could now hopefully expect thunderstorms and rainfall to restore the balance. Let’s look at the weather update.

Gauteng Weather released an early forecast warning on Tuesday 3 December: “Heavy rain possible at times in Gauteng between Wednesday and Friday.”

However, Gauteng Weather also states that an early forecast is subject to change. More information will be released closer to the time, and the team assures that they will monitor and share updates when necessary.

Gauteng weather update: 3 to 8 December 2019

Johannesburg weather update

According to Accuweather, Joburg residents can expect a sunny and warm Tuesday, followed by showers and ‘heavier thunderstorms’ on Wednesday.

It will be wet and windy from Wednesday through to Friday, with the sun only peeking out again over the weekend. Thunderstorms can be expected ‘in spots’ on Saturday and Sunday.

Average temperatures this week are 33 degrees on Tuesday, 17 degrees on Wednesday, 16 degrees on Thursday, 18 degrees on Friday, 24 degrees on Saturday and 23 degrees on Sunday.

The month overview shows that we can expect cloud cover, showers and storms for most for most of the last stretch of this decade. In fact, the sun will only be out in full force again on 21 December.

Pretoria weather update

The same conditions can be expected in Pretoria. Heavy thunderstorms and showers can be expeced from Wednesday through to Friday all throughout the day..

Saturday will bring about “a little morning rain” while it be partly cloudy for the remainder of the day. Thunderstorms are expected again on Sunday 8 December 2019.

Average temperatures this week are 35 degrees on Tuesday, 21 degrees on Wednesday, 18 degrees on Thursday, 22 degrees on Friday, 27 degrees on Saturday and 22 degrees on Sunday.

The month overview shows that Pretorians can expect cloud cover, showers and and thunderstorms for most for most of December. The sun will only be back on it’s post again on 21 December.

Other parts of the country

The South African Weather Service issued several warnings for flooding, severe storms and gale force winds on Tuesday 3 December, between 13:00 and 23:00.

Damaging winds are expected between Port Edward and Maputo, while heavy rain which could lead to localised flooding is expected across eastern parts of the province on 3 December.

Severe thunderstorms and heavy downpours are expected in Uthukela, UMgungundlovu and Harry Gwala during the evening hours, while heavy swell in excess of four metres is expected between Port Edward and Kosi Bay today. Read more here.

In Africa

Several reports indidcate that Tropical Cyclone Pawan has formed in the Arabian Sea and will be expected to make landfall on the northeast coast of Africa in the coming days.

It will bring heavy rainfall and flooding to parts of Somalia and Eastern Ethiopia.
