Unai Emery sacked by Arsenal after poor start to season

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been removed from his position effective immediately with the club announcing his departure on Friday 29 November.

Unai Emery sacked

Emery’s sacking comes after Arsenal slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League at the Emirates on Thursday evening. Arsenal have made a slow start to the Premier League sitting eighth after 13 matches, eight points adrift of fourth place Chelsea and a wopping 19 points off the pace set by league-leaders Liverpool. The club have not won a match since their 24 September triumph over Vitoria SC in the Europa League. Arsenal’s last league win was their 1-0 win over Bournemouth at the Emirates. The Gunners haven’t won away from home since the opening day of the season and discontent was growing among fans who feel that he has taken the club backwards since succeeding legendary manager Arsene Wenger.

“We announce today that the decision has been taken to part company with our head coach Unai Emery and his coaching team,” An Arsenal press release read.

Speaking on behalf of the Arsenal board and our owners Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, Josh Kroenke said: “Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.”

“The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required.”

Leave it to Freddie

With Unai Emery sacked Arsenal assistant coach and former player Freddie Ljungberg will take charge of the club on an interim basis until the board are able to appoint a replacement.

“We have asked Freddie Ljungberg to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach. We have full confidence in Freddie to take us forward.

The search for a new head coach is underway and we will make a further announcement when that process is complete.
