Why did SAPS officer rent out her service pistol?
According to an IOL News report, Job was part of the Bloemfontein VIP Protection Unit. The 34-year-old was revered as a hardworking and dedicated officer.
However, after months of speculation that she had gone to desperate measures to source finance for her personal troubles, a team of Hawks members was deployed to hatch a plan to catch Job’s suspected corrupt activities.
However, placing her own colleagues in the line of danger was the last thing they expected. Several tip-offs were received, alleging that the SAPS officer was renting out her service pistol to criminals in exchange for money.
Therefore, an undercover operation, led by the Hawks, was launched and several covert officers, posing as robbers, approached Job about possibly hiring out her pistol for a robbery of the SAPS Joint Operations Centre, where she worked.
On Tuesday, 8 October, the ‘robbers’ met with Job, where she allegedyl handed over her service pistol under the condition that she was paid R30 000 when the robbery was done.
The takedown of the JOC was scheduled for Thursday, 11 October, and sure enough, the Hawks members went through with the fake robbery. The 34-year-old, after receiving word of the robbery, accepted her R30 000 payment and this was the nail in the coffin.
The charges she faces
Job was arrested soon after she confirmed receipt of the payment and charged with corrpution as well as conspiracy to commit armed robbery and theft. According to Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Lynda Steyn, her pistol, vehicle and cellphone were seized and submitted as evidence in her case.
Another damning piece of evidence that will be used against her is the whistleblower who exposed Job’s illicit rental service. It’s believed that the 34-year-old went around telling people that she was in dire financial strain and was selling service pistols for a reasonable price.
At this time, the disgraced officer has not made any official comment in her defence. This is a developing story.
