Limpopo weather update: Thunderstorms expected in these regions

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a weather warning on the possibility of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Limpopo, on Wednesday, 13 November.

Wet conditions have made their way from KwaZulu-Natal into other provinces, like Limpopo and parts of Gauteng. According to Saws readings, the warm temperatures expected in Limpopo for the most parts of Wednesday, 13 November, will be accompanied by heavy rainfall and raging thunderstorms.

Temperature

The maximum temperature for parts of Limpopo is expected to range between 27°C and 31°C. This is the temperature data for the four big metros in the province:

  • Thohoyandou: 20°C / 28°C
  • Polokwane: 17°C / 27°C
  • Thabazimbi: 19°C / 31°C
  • Tzaneen: 18°C / 28°C

Rainfall

Most parts of the province are already experiencing wet conditions on Wednesday. According to Ventusky.com readings, precipitation levels between 14:00 and 17:00 are expected to range between 1.2mm and 5.4mm.

Thunderstorms

The humid weather, matched with the heavy rainfall, has brought along with it, raging thunderstorms. While rainfall is expected to dissipate towards the evening, Ventusky.com readings suggest that thunderstorm activity will rage on between 600j/kg and 400j/kg until the early hours of Thursday, 14 November.

At this time, the situation has not gotten out of control, in Limpopo. At least, not as bad as it has been in KwaZulu-Natal. It has been confirmed that at least two people died as a result of the tornado that ripped through New Hanover and Mpolweni, on Tuesday.

While people from the province’s affected areas have been left to pick up what remains of their structures, rescue workers have launched a search operation for a nine-year-old who was swept away by the torrential conditions as he was walking along the low-level bridge, at Nonoti River, in KwaDukuza.
