The English Premier League returns after the international break with a crunch round of fixtures, as Manchester City and Co seek to reel in Liverpool at the top of the standings.
Liverpool’s fizzing 3-1 win over the reigning champions at Anfield a fortnight ago left them eight points clear at the top of the EPL table, with a third defeat of the campaign leaving City fourth in the pile behind Leicester and Chelsea.
And it’s an epic battle of the Blues as Frank Lampard’s men tackle Pep Guardiola’s side in the late Saturday kick off at the Etihad Stadium
Chelsea saw off Crystal Palace last time out to make it six wins on the spin as their rookie coach finds his feet and then some at Stamford Bridge.
Jurgen Klopp returns from his South African holiday during the break with a trip to Palace the next task for his side on Saturday.
His Reds go into the game having dropped only two points all season, taking on Roy Hodgson’s Eagles whose bright start to the campaign is a distant memory after four winless matches.
Second-placed Leicester have won four in a row, most recently a comprehensive 2-0 home success over ailing Arsenal, as they travel to Brighton on Saturday.
Graham Potter’s Seagulls suffered defeat at Manchester United two weeks ago, seeing them dip back into the bottom half of the table.
United were in serious need of the three points, restoring some dignity at Old Trafford with a rise to seventh in the Premier League table ahead of their trip to high-flying Sheffield United.
The Red Devils cross the Pennines on Sunday to tackle Chris Wilder’s promoted Blades, who are unbeaten in five and fifth in the EPL.
A London derby kicks off the top flight’s return, with Tottenham and West Ham both in dire need of an upturn in fortunes.
Manuel Pellegrini’s Hammers have gone off the boil badly in recent weeks, losing four of their last five to flirt with the relegation places.
Spurs, meanwhile, never got going in the first place and sit 14th, just a point ahead of their capital city neighbours. But the north London side have a fresh face in their midst with Jose Mourinho having taken over the hotseat from Mauricio Pochettino.
Elsewhere in London Arsenal are also out to end a four-match winless streak when they host floundering Southampton on Saturday.
A series of miserable results has left boss Ralph Hasenhuttl in the last-chance saloon at the south coast club – and perhaps getting the first round in for under-fire Gunners chief Unai Emery.
Improving Wolves and steady Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth meet at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday in their mutual bid to secure top-half status.
Everton are after a third win in five as they look to continue their recent rise against rock-bottom Norwich on Saturday.
Watford are eyeing a boost towards the right side of the drop zone on Saturday when they welcome back former boss Sean Dyche and his Burnley side to Vicarage Road.
Aston Villa are the other side of the dotted line after three straight defeats and must wait until Monday to round off the EPL weekefnd with a home match against Newcastle at Villa Park.
