Best Black Friday deals: Woolworths vs Checkers vs PnP vs Spar

The shopping frenzy that is Black Friday has ballooned in South Africa to become a national event. Following in the footsteps of American retailers, brands in Mzansi have already started slashing prices across the board. That includes our major supermarkets of Woolworths, Checkers, Pick n Pay and Spar.

The big day may still be a week away, but there are already some brilliant bargains up for grabs. We’ve gone through what’s currently on offer, and everything shoppers can expect ahead of 29 November:

Black Friday deals from Woolworths

Woolies have focused their early efforts on fashion and retail. Starting from this Friday, the expense of clothing items and accessories will fall dramatically. Shoppers have a week to get their hands on these pre-Black Friday bargains:

  • 50% off selected women and men’s fashion items.
  • 50% off Country Road Styles.
  • 50% off selected beauty items.
  • 40% off certain items of footwear.
  • 30% off chosen bras.
  • 20% off kitchenware as well as female fashion accessories and men’s footwear.
  • Three-for-two deals are in place for beauty make-up and Witchery fashion.

Checkers and Shoprite have offers you can’t refuse

A list of items hasn’t yet been made available by the store, but there is a way to get involved with their Black Friday offerings ahead of schedule: Members of the newly launched “Xtra Savings” rewards programme will be the first to receive advance notifications of the Black Friday deals on offer at Checkers. You can apply for a card in-store or via the Checkers app, and get great bargains on items including:

  • Tech and electrical goods.
  • Household appliances.
  • Essentials such as food, drinks and clothing.

Black Friday deals from Pick n Pay

The store have gone for a tech-themed offering this year, with the bulk of their best deals coming from their electronics department. Big TVs, printers, washing machines are all on offer at insanely-discounted prices. We’ve picked-out the best of the bunch, and these deals will run right up until 23:59 on Black Friday:

  • R150 off a new Hoover.
  • R2 100 off of LG front-loader washing machines – a discount of 25%.
  • R300 off of Hisense Microwaves, saving customers 33% of the original price.
  • R700 off of HP 4-in-1 printers, now going at just R999.
  • R200 off LogiTech laptop speakers, with 40% slashed off the initial cost.
  • R3 000 off AIM 55″ Smart TVs, bringing the price down from R6 999 to R3 999.
  • R500 off DTSV Explora boxes + installation, down from R1 999 to R1 499 for the full service.
  • R750 off Nescafe Dolce Gusto coffee machines, essentially making them half-price.

Spar keeping it low key… in South Africa, anyway

The South African branches are keeping their cards close to their chest. We’re awaiting further confirmation of what exactly Spar will have on offer for Black Friday, but we have a feeling alcohol lovers are going to be well-looked after. The award-winning Darling Cellars wine will be on offer at 40% off next Friday:

Meanwhile, if you happen to be in Nigeria between 23 – 30 November, you are ridiculously in-luck. They are offering an eight-day Black Friday extravaganza, with a number of items down by 70%. Hell, it might be cheaper to fly to Naija and do your next grocery shop there before the month is over.
