16 tips on how to avoid being a smash-and-grab victim
As the festive season approaches and general crime rises, some fear for their lives, knowing that a smash-and-grab could possibly lead to death. According to the Cape Argus and GermistonCityNews, Community Safety MEC, Albert Fritz, The South African Police Service (SAPS) and 1st for Women Insurance, have listed some tips to help commuters keep safe.
Smash-and-grab tips from Albert Fritz
1. Increased vigilance.
2. leaving space between vehicles.
3. winding up windows, particularly at intersections.
4. placing valuables in the boot of the car so that they are out of sight.
5. Do not use your own cellphone while driving.
Fritz said he would liaise with the City of Cape Town to alert them to possible hotspot areas and determine whether there is any action that can be taken.
Tips from SAPS
Police offer commuters several tips under the hashtag #BootItOrLoseIt.
6. Avoid parking your motor vehicle where there are no security officers guarding other cars.
7. Do not leave your firearm in the motor vehicle’s glove compartment or anywhere in the vehicle when you park the vehicle, this is against the law.
8. Make sure all the doors and windows are properly locked when you park your car.
9. Be aware of people coming to you and informing you that you have a flat tyre, the intention can be to steal items they see inside the car or rob you of your car.
10. Do not open your windows for hawkers along the road and at the robots.
11. Do not use a cellular phone unless you have a hands-free kit.
12. Lock your valuables in the car’s boot before departure.
13. At night, park in well-lit areas.
1st for Women Insurance share their tips
Marketing Manager of 1st for Women Insurance, Casey Rousseau said smash-and-grab attacks demand immediate and effective action. Her tips are as follows:
14. Always remain on full alert when stationary in your vehicle and avoid being distracted.
15. When you approach an intersection, leave a reasonable stopping distance between you and the car in front of you, to allow yourself room to manoeuvre and escape any dangerous situation.
16. Do not confront the smash-and-grabbers, as they may be armed and further confrontation could risk the life of the victim.
“Although authorities are taking several steps to combat smash-and-grab incidents, it is up to you, the motorist to avoid becoming a victim by remaining as thoroughly prepared, vigilant and alert as possible,” said Rousseau.
The police said if in doubt about the safety of an area, phone a police station for advice and help.
