Texas Governor claims SOUTH AFRICANS ‘illegally crossing US border’

Good luck making sense of this one. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has endured a foot-in-mouth moment online, after he suggested that South Africans were ‘crossing the US border’ from the mainland – despite the 9 000 mile gap between the two countries. Abbott was addressing fears about the spread of the new COVID-19 variant.

Texas Governor ridiculed for saying South Africans ‘illegally crossing US border’

Omicron, first discovered in Southern Africa, has put the world on red alert. It is a highly mutated strain of the virus, and there’s a chance it could reduce vaccine efficacy and spread quickly. However, scientists need another two weeks before they can speak with any real certainty on the variant, once real-world data has been collected.

But, never one to miss an opportunity to score political points, the Texas Governor decided it was time to take a swipe at Joe Biden on Sunday night – who he blamed for ‘doing nothing’ to stop South Africans illegally crossing the US border.

Now, either we’ve got some very, very strong swimmers… or Greg Abbott needs a geography lesson, ASAP.

“Biden banned travel from South Africa because of the new Covid variant. Immigrants have recently been apprehended crossing our border illegally from South Africa. Biden is doing nothing to stop immigrants from South Africa from entering illegally. Pure politics and hypocrisy.”

Greg Abbott whips up fears over Omicron variant

The US has officially put a travel ban in place for all journeys to and from South Africa, following in the footsteps of the UK and several other European countries. President Biden is expected to brief the media about America’s response to the Omicron variant later on Monday. And no, we aren’t expecting him to build a wall to keep South Africans out…
