Rekindling romance: Creative ways to show your love this Valentine’s Day

The weekend of love is here and it’s time to show your romantic side with some creative Valentine’s Day ideas. But chocolates and roses could not be more unoriginal. Rather unleash your inner romantic by giving a unique gift or experience that will both surprise and delight your special person.

Make a book for Valentine’s day

Make a book about why you love your partner, focusing on the things that you love about them and why you are thankful to have them in your life.

Organise a special Valentine’s day getaway 

Plan a surprise getaway. The tourism industry is desperate for support and many accommodation establishments will still have space as fewer people are travelling. Make a quick arrangement for childcare if you have kids, pack light and whisk your loved one off to a romantic destination where you can spend some quality time together.

There are lots of irresistible lockdown specials on offer that would normally set you back much more. Also, with beaches now open following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent announcement, a romantic coastal getaway may be just what you need to reignite that spark.

Make a ‘Kisses’ bag

Write down every kind of kiss that you can think of on small pieces of paper, place them in a little bag (preferably red), and give it to your partner to dip into and choose.

Arrange a Scavenger Hunt for Valentine’s Day

Write little riddles with clues to items you have placed around the house, which will then take your loved one on a scavenger hunt for a Valentine’s treasure.

Create a Love Voucher cache

Make up vouchers with special prizes such a massage, movie or dinner for two, and hide them around the house in places that your partner frequents.

Head back in time

Write down a little story about the first time you met or had your first date. Better yet, take your partner back to that place and read them the story while highlighting your favourite memories.

Go to the drive-in… at home

Weather permitting, organise a movie night by using a projector on the garage wall, or by creating a drive-in in your driveway or on your balcony. Show one of your favourite romance films.

You could even snuggle up in the car or on the couch together as you take in one of your favourite couple films. Don’t forget the popcorn and, now that the liquor ban has been eased, the bubbly!

The most important thing come this Sunday 14 February is just to have fun and enjoy the day with the special person in your life. It needn’t be cheesy, and it needn’t cost you an arm and a leg either.

And remember to show you care not just on the day of love, but every day of the year!
