A royal Valentine: How the royal family celebrates Valentine’s Day

After Queen Elizabeth II married Prince Philip on 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey, and after celebrating the fact that her marriage is the longest of any British sovereign, many are wondering how the queen and the royal family will be spending Valentine’s Day.

The Queen and Prince Philip

According to All4Women, the Queen is very dedicated to her role as sovereign. Therefore, she (and most of the royals) spend their valentines expressing their love to their country with various acts of service and charity and no bold romantic gestures or notable plans. For example, last year Queen Elizabeth spent Valentine’s day alone. Since Prince Philip (who is a few months away from his 100th birthday) retired from his royal duties the couple has been living separately with the prince preferring to live in the country.

Prince William and Kate Middleton

Last year, Prince William and Duchess Kate spent Valentine’s day performing royal duties. While Prince William doted on his wife often during the public appearance noting her beauty and sharing that he had planned something special for her later. A Royal insider shared that the prince would likely have flowers, a card, a special dinner and sweet gift waiting at home for the duchess, much like many other couples who try to muster the romance after a hard day at work. Currently, the Cambridges are mostly working from home and are likely to have a more romantic Valentines day this year than last, along with their children.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Meanwhile, back in the United States, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will most probably spend the day together after they stepped down as senior members fo the royal family in 2020. It is said that the couple are expected to spend a quiet day at home with their son and if Megan old blog posts are anything to go by breakfast in bed will be a must-have.

I am such a sucker for Valentine’s Day,’ the former actress wrote on her now-deleted website. “Without fail, every 14 February, I wake up feeling like I’m immersed in a Robert Doisneau photo, waiting with bated breath to be dipped into a kiss,” she added. “But delusions of Francophile grandeur aside, Valentine’s Day is special wherever you happen to find yourself. And in terms of gifts, be it breakfast in bed, a sweet love note, or a single flower, it really is the thought that counts,” she wrote.

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank

Meanwhile, Princess Eugenie will most probably revel in her new-found motherhood after giving birth to a baby boy earlier in February. As per the announcement shared on Instagram, the young tot was born at the Portland Hospital. Both Eugenie and her older sister, Princess Beatrice, had been born there. It’s also where Meghan Markle gave birth to baby Archie. This is The Duke of York and Sarah the Duchess of York’s first grandchild, as well as the ninth great-grandchild for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
