Sony Xperia 0 rumoured to launch at MWC2020
Sony is working hard on its upcoming PlayStation 5, but game consoles aren’t the company’s only focus point. Sony is also working on four flagship phones for 2020, including the Xperia 0.
According to a new report from Android Next, the company is set to introduce the Xperia 0, Xperia 1.1, Xperia 3 and Xperia 5.1 at the start of the year, with launches scheduled from August 2020.
Possible February 2020 unveiling
Rumour on the interwebs has it that the Sony Corporation will be unveiling at least one of the flagship phones at the 2020 Mobile World Congress (MWC2020).
It would fall in with Sony’s trend of unveiling new phones at the start of the year; the Xperia 1, Xperia 10 and 10 Plus were all unveiled in January 2019, according to Let’s Go Digital.
The Sony Corporation filed a patent with the Japanese Patent Office (JPO) back in March 2019, and the design was – which includes a revolutionary interface – was published in WIPO Global Design Database on 19 December 2019.

The images provided with the patent include two colour renders of the user interface. The patent also mentions a punch-hole camera in the top centre of the device.
This brings the new Sony smartphones in line with the camera systems found in other flagship phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and the upcoming Galaxy S11.
Sony Xperia phones have been water-resistant since 2013 when the Xperia Z was released; therefore, it’s possible that Sony might opt for a pop-up camera.
The patent also shows what appear to be a multi-window function. The split-screen option was introduced with the Xperia 1, via Side Sense. Thew new interface seems to have added functionality.
Other than the bits of the information provided in the patent documents, which can be viewed here and here, very little is known about Sony’s upcoming flagship phone.
The rumour mill is buzzing about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset. In addition, it is obvious that this will also be Sony’s first 5G-enabled smartphone.
Official introduction during MWC 2020
It’s also curious one of the images shows a date: Monday 25 February. This has led many to believe that the device will be showcased at the MWC, which starts on 24 February 2020.
Sony usually holds a press conference on the opening day of the Mobile World Congress to officially introduce their upcoming devices; we live in hope.
It’s unlikely we’ll have any official confirmation from Sony until next year.
