South Africa: Today’s latest news and headlines, Monday 13 January

Morning all. We’re entering the middle of January, but there’s no need for the blues. Eskom have even promised to keep the lights on for a little while. Truly, we are blessed.

We’re looking ahead to the big developments forecast for today, and looking back at some of Sunday’s most eye-catching headlines. Here’s what you need to know…

Today’s latest news in South Africa, Monday 13 January

Eskom promise no load shedding… for the next two days

Following another tumultuous week at Megawatt Park, there seems to be relative calm on the horizon – even if it’s come before the storm. The power utility have stated that there will be no load shedding on Monday or Tuesday in South Africa, forecasting “a low probability” for power cuts over the next two days. But a promise from Eskom these days is worth as much as a lump of wet coal.

Energy consumption is set to rise on Monday. Despite restoring some of their units to service, Eskom’s breakdowns have been hovering around the 14 000 MW-mark. Another unscheduled hiccup could plunge South Africa back into the darkness last seen in December.

OR Tambo hit by power cuts

Speaking of darkness, South Africa’s biggest airport had the lights go out on Sunday. A fire at a nearby electricity sub-station ended up causing a blackout at OR Tambo, as travellers were forced to use cellphone torches to navigate through some of the terminals. Power was restored by 13:00 on Sunday.

State Capture Inquiry

We’re back in business on Tuesday 14 January, and things are going to change in Raymond Zondo’s house. The Commission are looking to make it an offence for witnesses to obstruct their work – and that includes filing charges against those who evade questions or completely refuse to answer them. Here’s what is coming this month:

Tuesday 14 January

  • Colonel Christine Anderson to testify about Waterkloof landing; and
  • Two other witnesses will deal with matters unrelated to Waterkloof.

Wednesday 15 January to Wednesday 22 January

  • Undisclosed number of witnesses expected to testify about law enforcement agencies.

Monday 27 January to Friday 31 January

Love Island hits our shores

Well, we can’t be serious all the time can we? One of the UK’s most-loved TV shows is being filmed in Cape Town this year. Love Island kicked off on Sunday evening, and a load of posh, offensively-attractive “daddy’s credit-card” types will be the most famous faces in the Mother City – for the next two months, anyway.

This is the swanky villa they will be living in, based somewhere in Constantia.

PSL round-up

Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp was impressed with his side’s ability to manage the game, as they beat Cape Town City 3-0 at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The win – their second on the trot with an identical scoreline – saw them open up a nine-point gap on their closest rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns, who have a date with Orlando Pirates in midweek.

Speaking after the game, the German hailed his charges for finding the net at the perfect moments, as they shut the struggling Mother City outfit out of the contest. There were two other results to report on Sunday:

  • Bloemfontein Celtic 4-2 Black Leopards
  • AmaZulu Durban 0-2 SuperSport United

Cricket rankings: ICC Men’s T20

Babar Azam and Rashid Khan retain their places at the top of the ICC Men’s T20 rankings as the top batsman and bowler respectively. Mohamed Nabi – also of Afghanistan – is the highest-rated all-rounder in the format, and South Africa’s only representative in the top tens is Andile Phehlukwayo, who is seen as the sixth-best bowler in T20 internationals.
